PS Jailbreak - Install Your PS3 Games To Your Hard Drive With The Worlds First PS3 Modchip
Along comes the PS Jailbreak. Some people call it the PS3 Jailbreak or a PS3 Modchip, but whatever the name, it's one cool little accessory. Its a small USB dongle, that tells the PS3 that it's okay to install games on to your PS3 hard drive and then will also allow you to load them from there too, sands the disc.
It works, or rather, installs, just like the USB modchip for the PS2. No wiring, and no soldering. While the USB mod for the Playstation 2 was somewhat limited in what it could do, the PS Jailbreak is not.
The PS Jailbreak works and acts exactly the same as the older PS2 USB Modchips. Just plug it into the USB port on the PS3 and you're all set. And then another USB flash drive so that you can then install your homebrew games and applications, and most importantly, your Backup manager.
A good number of PS3 owners believed that a PS3 modchip was just not possible, that the PS3 was just not open and unable to be modified, let alone have a product that actually worked.
What really has me excited is that the installation, if I can even call it an installation, is so incredibly simple, that anyone can do it, without any technicals skills or soldering experience. Heck, you don't even have to own a soldering iron..
In my experience with modchips, you always had to solder anywhere from 6 to 32 wires inside and right on to the main motherboard of the game system itself. I was very surprised, but thankful, that you don't need to do any soldering inside the Playstation 3 console at all. It’s just plug in and play.
Along with the USB Dongle, you also get the included backup managr software, and this piece of software is what does the work once the dongle is plugged in. After you've installed the dongle, you also have to install a piece of software called the Backup Manager, don't worry - it's included with the PS Jailbreak from what I can tell.
Once the backup manager is installed on to the menu of the PS3, any time you insert a game disc, it will ask you if you wish to install it on to the PS3 hard drive. Once selected, you can see the progress bar as your game is being installed on the Playstation 3 hard drive.
How long will it take to install your games to the intermal hard drive? Well, that seems to depend on the game, but I've not yet run accross one that took more than 7 minutes. It's interesting to note that the games do NOT take up 25GB each, some games are only 2 or 3 GB in total.
Okay, everything you needed to do is done, you have the PS Jailbreak, its installed, you've put a game or two on your HDD, now it's time for the fun. Now that your game is installed on to your internal or external hard drive, you’ll once again be able to go into the backup manager and it’ll show a full list of all of your games already installed. Once you're back in the backup manager, just push the button on your controller to load the game you want to start playing.
It’s faster to play games from the internal hard drive because there’s virtually no load times. I'm honestly finding that games load about 10 to 20 times faster from the hard drive, then the disc itself. Again, the biggest speed increase I noticed was when I would beat a level in a game. The next level came on almost instantly.
If you already have a PS3 console, grab this little gem while it's available. And if you don't yet have a PS3, but plan on buying one, make sure you set aside some money to also add the PS Jailbreak to your must have accessory list. It allows you to game faster, but also protects your expensive game collection from scratches or damage that you would have during regular use.
