The PBX (Private Branch Exchange) produces call records for a call accounting system which in turn converts the call records into data that can be used by the system. A CDR is a text based string of information carrying details about a phone call and covers the date, time, duration and other useful information. If there are no CDRs or if they are erroneous, this will result in a malfunction of the call accounting platform or can even bring the entire process to a stand still.
There are three principle layouts in which different PBX products generate the CDR. These data formats are: serial data, Internet Protocol (IP) data; data contained in a file.
1. Serial data: The serial data is transferred via a serial Recommended Standard 232 (RS232) port where the device sending the data and the the device receiving the data both have to reside within fifteen meters. Although a serial port can transmit information up to 50 meters, data accuracy is not guaranteed.
2. Internet Protocol (IP) data: One of the formats in which PBX produces CDR is the Internet Protocol (IP) data format where the call records are sent to a network location in the shape of data packets. The drawback of this method is that it is only reliable inside a LAN (Local Area Network). It is not recommended to transfer crucial information over the Internet using the IP data format.
3. File Data: The file data layout is a simple layout where the PBX software writes the CDRs to a commonly shared file, normally in simple text. This data is then used by the call accounting system.
The file data format does not need any additional hardware or software for saving the Call Data Records, yet the serial and IP data formats do. The device used is known as a call buffer which may be a hardware component linked near the PBX, or it may be software installed inside the client's LAN. In both cases, it receives Call Data Records from the Private Branch Exchange, temporarily keeps them and then transfers them to the call accounting platform in a reliable manner. As per the kind of call buffers being utilized, you can find them priced from $200 or as high as $500 per unit.
A call buffer can be classified into three variations:
The serial to serial buffer takes the serial data and transfers it to a call accounting system whilst maintaining its serial input format.
The serial to IP call buffer gathers the serial data and transforms it into IP data, then sends addressed packages onto the network. A limitation to this call buffer is that the information needs to be stored and transferred within a LAN only, as data in this layout traveling via the Intranet or Internet may not arrive at its target properly.
The third approach in using a call buffer is transmitting the call data records securely over the Internet. In this case, the data (serial, IP or file) is gathered, stored and transferred onto the web-based call accounting system using reliable Internet protocols (such as FTP, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)) that can reliably carry data.
