Golf was introduced into India by the British during the days of the Raj. In fact, the first golf courses were set up by them for the British Indian army. Initially only the white officers were allowed to play this game, but later the native officers were also permitted to be members of the Golf clubs. After the British left India in 1947, they left behind a large number of Golf courses, which were in use for the British officers. These were gratefully taken over by the Indian Army and are a memorable relic of the British Raj.
One of the first golf courses was set up at Colaba, under the aegis of the United Services club. This is a nine hole golf course that abuts the sea coast.it is a wonderful place to play the game with the Arabian sea lapping one end of the course. A long shot with the woods can well land the ball into the Arabian sea. This golf course is maintained excellently, but membership is restricted to service officers.
Another excellent Golf course is at Mhow in Madhya pradesh. This must be one of the oldest course and is again a tribute to the Raj.The course was set up at the cantonment town of Mhow when the 5 division of the Southern army was stationed there. The course is well kept and it is a good exercise to play 9 holes of good golf.
Another significant course is at Fort William at Kolkutta. This is part of the oldest settlement of the English from the days of Robert clive. The course among shaded trees, close to the ramparts of Fort William is at least one hundred years old. It is a nine hole course and is looked after by the Headquarters Eastern Command,Indian Army. Many famous Indian golfers like Bunty Randhawa started their careers at this course. The course is like an oasis inthe city of Kolkutta and has excellent greens and fair ways.
Other Golf courses set by the English that are still in use are the ones at Lucknow, Shillong, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Most of these course came up during British days. However the Army has constructed golf courses at Delhi, Bhantinda and Dibrigarh in Assam. Golf is a game which is patronized by the Army officers. However civilians are debarred from playing at these course, except as guests of service officers.
There are excellent Army course at Bengdubi near Baghdogra and a new course has just been commissioned at Bhatinda. The Army has certainly taken to Golf in a big way and we must thank the English for this.
